Travel disruptions in Europe
It's important to know if there are disruptions or planned works on the tracks and stations that may affect your travel plans. Some railway companies offer dedicated pages with updates and detailed maps. Below you can find the details, per country. A few railway companies only offer this information in their own language. We've also included those links, as you may want to use a translation plugin to read the updates.
We do our best to keep the information on this page accurate and up-to-date. However, we cannot influence train disruptions or strikes, and there are occasions when a trade union cancels a planned strike action at the last minute without our knowledge.
Ongoing strikes & disruptions
- Train strikes in Italy: 23-24 November
-
The staff of FS Group, Trenitalia, Trenitalia TPER and Trenord have announced a strike from 9 pm on Saturday 23 November to 9 pm on Sunday 24 November. The strike may impact train services prior to its start and after it has ended.
We recommend checking the Trenitalia website and their up-to-date timetable for information on whether your journey may be affected. It is possible to reschedule your journey on similar transportation as soon as possible, subject to seat availability.
Delay compensation: Interrail travellers with an activated travel day on either of the affected strike dates might request compensation here.
- Train strikes in the Netherlands: 13-22 November
-
The trade union FNV has announced several strikes at ProRail traffic control centres between 13 and 22 November 2024.
On Wednesday 13 November, 2024, there will be no trains between 6 am and 9 am in Noord-Holland and parts of Flevoland and Utrecht. There will also be no trains between Leiden, Schiphol and Haarlem. On the High Speed Line (HSL), no trains will run between Rotterdam, Schiphol and Amsterdam.
Schiphol Airport station will have very limited train services during the strike: four trains per hour will run between Amsterdam Centraal and Schiphol. If possible, alternative means of transport should be used.
International train passengers will also be affected by the strike. On Tuesday 12 November and Wednesday 13 November, international train timetables will be adjusted. An overview and travel advice can be found on the NS International website.
For the rest of the morning, be aware of delays and cancellations as it takes time to start up the train services. We advise you to check the NS timetable for up-to-date information regarding your journey. Please plan your trip shortly before departure.
Strikes will also take place on the following days:
- Friday 15 November: ProRail Utrecht and Amersfoort
- Monday 18 November: ProRail Rotterdam, The Hague and Roosendaal
- Wednesday 20 November: ProRail Eindhoven and Maastricht
- Friday 22 November: ProRail Zwolle, Groningen and Arnhem
Delay compensation: Interrail travellers with an activated travel day on any of the affected strike dates might request compensation here.
- Railway line closure in Norway: November 2024
-
A mishap on the Trondheim-Bodø railway line has resulted in some sections of this line being closed. All trains on this line have been impacted. However, the train line between Mosjøen and Mo i Rana is expected to open at the end of Week 48 (between 25 November and 1 December).
We recommend that you check the SJ Nord website or the Entur website for up-to-date train timetables and information about your travels on this line.
Long-term strikes & disruptions
- Floods in Czech Republic, Austria and Poland
-
Extreme weather conditions during mid-September in Central Europe continue to cause disruptions in Austria, Czech Republic and Southern Poland.
- Austria: The 'Westbahn' railway line between Vienna and Linz will be disrupted for the time being, leading to longer travel times because of diversions and cancellations. This will also impact trains between Germany and Switzerland to Vienna (and further to Hungary).
- Czech Republic: Certain railway lines in the North and East might still be impacted.
- Poland: Around Klodzko, on the railway line from Wroclaw to Prague, replacement buses will run for the time being.
We recommend checking the timetables of the country you're travelling in – OBB for Austria, CD for Czech Republic and PKP for Poland – before departing for your planned train journey for up-to-date train schedules.
- Construction works at Sofia Central, Bulgaria till Aug 2025
-
BDZ, the Bulgarian national railway company, has announced that construction works at Sofia Central will start from 7 May 2024 and are expected to last for 15 months until August 2025, impacting the flow of traffic through the station. You can expect the following changes in traffic movement at Sofia Central:
- Trains from Ruse (Bucharest), Vidin and some from Varna will terminate at Sofia Sever (North station). For trains leaving/arriving at Sofia Sever, the BDZ have arranged special replacement trains which will do the transfer from Sofia Sever to Sofia Central. These trains will depart/arrive on platform 6, track 13.
- All trains coming from Northern Bulgaria will stop at Sofia Sever(North).
- Trams 1, 3, 7 and 27 will change their routes to accommodate traffic, with trams 27 and 3 continuing to Sofia Sever as their last stop.
- Bus line 413 will also continue to Sofia Sever.

- Paris - Turin - Milan line closure due to landslide
-
The French national railways has announced that rail traffic between Modane and St-Michel-Valloire will be disrupted for the time being due to a landslide that was reported in the French Alps on 27th August 2023. This would impact train journeys on the route between Paris – Turin – Milan. Read more about it on the SNCF website.
From 10th January, TGV trains will operate between Paris to Milan with a replacement bus from St Jean de Maurienne to Oulx after which passengers can continue their journey to Milan by train. The travel schedule including the replacement bus service with a slightly longer travel time will be updated on the Interrail Timetable and can also be found on the SNCF timetable. Your reservations will be valid for the whole route, including the replacement bus service. For more information, see this SNCF document.
We recommend using an alternative route via Zurich. Please note that the route from Paris – Zurich – Milan is currently facing a delay due to the partial closure of the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland (check post below for more information). Please make sure to check the SBB timetable shortly before departure of your planned journeys for up-to-date information.
