Adventure galore

Slovenia is fast becoming Europe’s ultimate year-round extreme sports paradise. The Sǒca Valley is hailed as one of the activity hotspots – canyon down crystal waterfalls, raft down raging rivers or perhaps paraglide over this heavenly landscape. Immense beauty can also be found underground – join a tour and explore Slovenia’s subterranean World Heritage Site: the Škocjan Caves. The Reka river runs 34 kilometres through the caves and at one point can be crossed via the dramatic Cerkvenik bridge.

To reach the Sǒca Valley take a train to Most na Soci, where you can take a taxi to Tolmin. To visit the Škocjan Caves take the train to Divača and from there follow the footpath to the caves, which should take 35 minutes on foot
    Old Town of Ljubljana
Old Town of Ljubljana

Ljubljana: Small but cool

A diminutive city that can easily be covered on foot, blossoms with cultural and fun things to do. Sprawling out from beneath the hilltop castle of the Slovene capital Ljubljana, is the picturesque Old Town. Take the funicular railway up to the castle and climb the clock tower for a bird’s eye view over the city. Pass by St Nicholas’ Cathedral and marvel at the fresco-adorned inners of this magnificent Baroque structure, before roaming along the tree-lined paths of Tivoli Park.

The Old Town is a 15-minute walk from either Ljubljana’s Rakovnik or Vodmat train station. Tivoli Park is a 5-minute walk from Ljubljana’s Tivoli train station.

Natural stunners

Elegantly perched beneath the towering peaks of Mt. Triglav is the picture-perfect Lake Bohinj – a glacial lake. Leisurely kayak around the azure waters or get your hiking boots on and scale the mountain. Whatever you choose you’ll love this tranquil little treasure. Fill up on postcard-perfection scenery at Logarska Dolina – it has all the ingredients: luscious glacial alpine valley, succulent stretches of meadow and rocky summits rising in the backdrop. Hike through this park and allow the sublime natural beauty to captivate you.

To travel to Lake Bohinj take the train to Bohinjska Bistrica and from there travel by bus or taxi to the lake. To reach Logarska Dolina take the train to Celje, where you can connect with a bus to the park.
    Predjama Castle
Predjama Castle

Strewn with culture

Hanging half way up a cliff, is one of the world’s most uniquely positioned castles – Predjama Castle, which looks as if it is moments away from being devoured by a cave’s ravenous mouth. The four-storey fortress is worth exploring up close as well. Don’t miss the drawbridge that crosses the fast-flowing river. Although the Slovene coast is short, it’s still managed to pack in a few gems. Piran is a delightful coastal town settled on the Istrian peninsula and gifted with stunning Venetian Gothic architecture.

To access the castle take the train to Postojna and take a taxi from there. Take the train to Koper and from there connect to a bus to Piran.

Vivacious party scene

For colourful and lively nightlife head for the capital – Ljubljana. The Old Town really comes to life during the summer months with friendly people spilling out from the bars and cafés onto the cobbled streets. Continue the evening with a stroll along the banks of the river and see what alluring places you stumble upon. A quirky addition to a night out is Metelkova – a site with former army barracks that became squatted and now functions as an alternative hodge-podge of bars, art studios, clubs and features a broad range of music genres.

Metelkova is a 15-minute walk from Ljubljana’s Vodmat train station.
