Places to visit
Cosmopolitan flair and relaxed moments.
Immerse yourself in Luxembourg city where you can experience culture, sample cosmopolitan flair, enjoy nature and simply feel at ease. Go for a stroll on the “Chemin de la Corniche”, a footpath atop the old ramparts; the Corniche, “Europe's most beautiful balcony”, offers a breath-taking view of the “Grund”. You can also venture into the bowels of the old ramparts; take a guided tour through the casemates. From the capital it is then simplicity itself to reach your next destinations by free public transport.
Relaxed cultural walk
Take a walk through the city’s beauty spots and follow the route of the “Museumsmile” to discover Luxembourg’s rich diversity of museums. It encompasses seven museums with very different themes and emphases. From the Villa Vauban with its romantic park, your route leads to the Musée d’art moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Mudam) at the end, where you can relax at the eye-catchingly designed café.
The hiking paradise
Luxembourg offers fascinating and premium hiking trails. You can decide between gentle circuits and challenging trails such as the Escapardenne Éislek Trail, which even extends beyond the country’s borders. North-east of the capital is the pretty little town of Echternach, where you can partake of numerous outdoor activities and relax around the Echternach lake. The enchanting Mullerthal region entices you with its wealth of woodland walking trails. Be inspired by nature and breathe deeply – you will find more than 40 hiking and cycling paths alongside the rail tracks and can take advantage of the numerous railway stops.
Enchanting castles
Luxembourg is famed for its castles, some of which are among the most impressive in all Europe. An extremely charismatic castle is perched atop a hill overlooking Vianden. Take a trip there with Luxembourg’s only chairlift and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the town and its environs.
Clerf (Clervaux) is directly accessible by train and is a good starting point for taking in some castles. The brilliant white castle towers above the town hosts “The Family of Man”, a photographic collection compiled by Edward Steichen, which will certainly impress you with its intensity.
Gastronomy
It is the combination of local and international specialities which makes Luxembourg cuisine so appealing. Quite apart from the high density of Michelin starred chefs, setting new trends and cultivating Haute Cuisine, the importance attached to good food, regional produce and hospitality in town and country is universal. The gourmet experience on the Moselle is especially good, home as it is to fine vintages that you can drink in the restaurants. Try traditional dishes such as “Bouneschlupp” or “Kniddelen”. Really simple – and simply good.
